He had been the lawyer for John and Paul Zeltner, who wouldn't pay their bill, and murdered him when he went to court to collect. After they killed Westernaver, they fled to their farm and held off a posse for many hours before giving up. During the shooting, Clarence Whittenmyre was killed.
