Mrs. Helen Walker, proprietor of an Elkhart roadhouse was shot and killed by Ike Nashy. She was killed while she was in the kitchen of the roadhouse for no reason whatever. A man who was asking the way to Elkhart was also shot and wounded. Elkhart police were called, and as the police car came down the road, Mr. Nashy stood in front of the roadhouse shooting at the police car, hitting Officer Henry Wentz in the leg as he was climbing from the car. The wound penetrated his femoral artery, causing Wentz to bleed to death. Patrolman Wentz had served with the Elkhart Police Department for 10 years. At close range, another Elkhart officer riddled Mr. Nashy with gun shots, killing him instantly.
Mr. Wentz is well known to most of the residents of Deshler, having been in the meat businss.
