Services were held for a Pennsylvania woman and her son who were killed in a two-car crash east of Deshler that injured six other person, three of them critically. Charlene E. Ballard, 34 and Stephen Ballard, 7, were pronounced dead at the scene, the intersection of Ohio 218 and 235. Four other Ballard children remain hospitalized. Sarah, 3, is in "good" condition in Wood County Hospital, Bowling Green, However, Gary 12, John 10, and Jennifer 5 are listed in "critical" condition in Medical College Hospital, Toledo. According to Wood County sheriff's deputies, the Ballard vehicle was eastbound on Ohio 281 and apparently ran a stop sign. Deputies said the Ballard car was struck broadside by a southbound auto. The Ballards were reportedly returning to their home in Mars, Pa., following an Easter weekend with relatives in the Custar area. Mrs. Ballard was born March 7, 1947 in Toledo to Edward and Marcella (Schwab) Wilhelm. She married John Ballard on Aug. 19, 1967 and he survives along with son with two sons, Gary and John; two daughters Jennifer and Sarah. A grandmother, Mrs. Theresa Schwab of Bowling Green; and four sisters, Mrs. James (Roseanne) Maas of Whitehouse; Mrs. Archie (Carol) Aker of Rising Sun; Mrs Mary Pickrell of Zanesville and Mrs. Steve (Jane) Culpepper of Bowling Green. She was a graduate of Westwood High School and Warners Beauty School, Toledo, and was a member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, Mars, Pa. Services were held at St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar with the Revs. James Brown and Michael O'Connell officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
