George Rethinger, manager of the south elevator lost his life almost instantly. He had gone to the basement to adjust or oil some machinery when his sleeve caught on the head of a set screw and he was wound around the shaft lashing the life out of him. When the body was discovered, his left arm had been torn from its socket at the shoulder, a cut on the forehead and a bruise on the breast or side. No bones were broken.
