The Neely family was killed in a collision with a B & O railroad train at a crossing on Dec. 9, 1902. The mother was operating a horse and buggy while attempting to cross the eastbound line. The estimated speed of the engine reportedly was 50 mph. The train had been changed to an earlier time by 15 minutes. Apparently was a poor visibility crossing. Mrs. Neely, apparently, was not aware that the train would be early. Mother, son, and young daughter were thrown to the south, and the horse to the north. The old daughter was found on the front of the engine cow catch. Later all three died. The son was still alive with reported crushed skull and live about an hour. The others died of internal injuries. The father, John, worked for the railroad as a field boss and was near by at the time and responded to the accident, unaware that it was his family after hearing the train danger whistle and seeing it stop.
