Mr. Nashy shot and killed Henry Wentz, 50, Elkhart police officer and Mrs. Helen Walker, 40, negress, proprietor of an Elkhart roadhouse. He shot and killed Mrs. Walker while she was in the kitchen of the roadhouse, for no reason. He also shot and wounded a man who was asking the way to Elkhart. Elkhart police were called, and as the police car came down the road, he stood in front of the roadhouse shooting at the car, hitting Officer Henry Wentz in the leg as he was climbing from the car. The wound penetrated his femoral artery, causing Wentz to bleed to death. Patrolman Wentz had served with the Elkhart Police Department for 10 years. At close range, another Elkhart officer riddled Mr. Nashy with gun shots, killing him instantly.
