Killed by Lightning
Barn Struck Near Jewell With Eight Men In It
During the storm Tuesday, says a Napoleon dispatch, Daniel Hane, 19 years old, was instantly killed by lightning, and eight companions, comprising a thresher gang, who took refuge in the farm belonging to Hane's father, were knocked senseless by the bolt, which set fire to the barn, destroying it with all its contents, near Jewell. The men were rescued by neighbors. Hane, who had been standing against the side of the barn, was picked up lifeless, and two of the other men were badly injured, probably fatally. The other six revived shortly after being taken out of the burning structure. The lightning played havoc throughout the western portion of the county, striking several barns and doing great damage but no other fatalities have been reported.
