Mrs. Matilda Powers, wife of Charles Powers of Deshler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hawkinson, was born in Malmo, Sweden, March 14, 1878, and died Monday morning, January 21, 1929 at 3 o'clock, after an illness covering a period of more than three years, due to tuberculosis.
The deceased came to America in 1898 locating at Minneapolis, Minnesota, later coming to Toledo, coming to Deshler soon after that as the housekeeper for Mr. Powers. After being in the home for about a year, she was united in marriage to Mr. Powers at Napoleon by justice D. H. Bretz, the date being February 13, 1920.
Although her illness was of long duration, Mrs. Powers bore her suffering patiently, giving evidence of her implicit faith in her Heavenly Father, and gave those in the home as little care as was possible. For many years she was affiliated with the German Luthran church, though within the last two or three years she became interested in Christian Science, living according to the tenets of this teaching.
Surviving are the husband, three step-children, John, Ray and Yvonne Powers of Deshler, her parents, two brothers, a sister in Sweden, and an aunt at Minneapolis.
Services were conducted from the Methodist church, Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. C. W. Baltzell, after which burial was made by Lyman C. Rader at the Woodlawn cemetery.
