Dr. Charles A. Fly, Jr. 75, a long-time dentist and active member of the Deshler community died Thursday evening, March 7 at Oak Grove Quality Care Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 3, 1916 in Carries Mills, Ill. to Charles A. and Catherine (Miller) Fly. He married Ruth Ellen Mounts on Aug. 3, 1941 and she survives. Dr. Fly began practicing dentistry in Deshler in 1946 and retired in 1984. A World War II veteran, Dr. Fly entered the U. S. Army in 1941 as a first lieutenant and was discharged in 1946 as a major. He served on the Deshler School Board from 1950-51 and was board president in 1953. Dr. Fly was very active with the Royal Order of Mason. He was raised in the Ft. Amanda Lodge #706 in Lima by his father in 1939. He dimitted in Sycamore Lodge #520 in Deshler in 1946. He as a grand high priest with Royal Arch Masons of Ohio. He was appointed executive director of the General Grand Chapter International Philanthropic, was crowned honorary 33rd Degree Mason in September 1955, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Mason Home in 1976. In 1984-85, he was elected grand master of the General Covent of Knights York Cross of Honor of the United States. He was a member and past president of the Deshler Lions Club and a member of Deshler United Methodist Church where he was a lay leader and trustee for many years. Dr. Fly is also survived by his mother, Catherine; a daughter, Cheryl Bourgea of Westerville, Ohio; a sister, Catherine Hanke of Wilmington, Del; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy on May 3, 1969. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, at Deshler United Methodist Church, Rev. Barry Weyant officiated. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Dubbs-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler.
