Howard G. Fitzwater, 81, of Holgate, died May 28 in the Holgate Quality Care. Born in Cleveland on March 24 1910, he was the son of Charles and Rosa (Graves) Fitzwater. On July 4, 1937, he married Florence Rayle, who died Oct. 12, 1977. He married Marie Hutchinson Downing on April 12, 1980 and she survives. A printer by trade, he had worked with newspapers in Oakwood and Continental as well as Wayne, Mich. After moving to Holgate in 1938, he was employed by the Henry County Review and purchased that newspaper in 1951, remaining the publisher until he sold the business in 1974. Mr. Fitzwater was a member of the Holgate United Methodist Church, where he had taught Sunday School; the Napoleon O.E.S. #232; the Holgate Lions for 45 years and the International Association of Lions Clubs; Henry County's Historical Society and AARP, and was a past president of the Holgate Chamber of Commerce. He was a Mason 40 years and was a 32nd degree Mason. His masonic affiliations included Ac-Co-Nox-E Council #55, Defiance Royal and Select Mason; Napoleon's Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons #256 and Holy Chapter #136 Royal Arch Masons; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo; AASR Valley of Toledo; Henry County Scottish Rite Club; Knights Templar State of Ohio at Defiance and a past master of the former Holgate Masonic Lodge. Services were held on May 30 in the Holgate Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Ketzler officiating. Intermnet was in the Monroe Cemetery, Continental.
