John S. Monteith, 72, died Friday at his home. Born in Huntsville, OH on March 9, 1918, he was the son of Harvey and Florence (Fry) Monteith. On Sept. 17, 1937, he married Susan Davis, and she survives. A former superintendent of Deshler Municipal Utilities from 1973-1984, he had also formerly served the City of Huntsville as its utilities superintendent, fire and police chiefs. A member of Deshler's Board of Public Affairs, Monteith was a World War II Army veteran and member of that village's American Legion, Lions Club and volunteer fire department, as well as Napoleon DAV, Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite and the Forty & Eight. He was also a member of the Huntsville Methodist Church. Also surviving are a son, John Robert of Courtside, Ariz.; five daughters, Evelyn Kerr of Niantic, Conn., Linda Scharf of Deshler, Christine Sigler of Findlay, Melanie Monteith of Bowling Green and Penelope August of Richlands, NC; two brothers, Huber "Monty" of Fort Wayne and Charles of Belle Center, OH; a sister, Mary Pierson of South Solan, Ind.; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra, in 1951. Services were held at the Dubbs-Rodenberger Funeral Home in Deshler on Tuesday with the Rev. Marilyn Chivington officiating. A graveside service was also given with military rites that were held at 3 p.m in the Huntsville Cemetery with John Fleishman officiating this ceremony.
