Betty House. 88, of Deshler, died Sunday, March 5, at Oak Grove Quality Care Nursing Center, Deshler.
She was born March 19, 1906, in Deshler to Frank and Helen (Barton) House.
Miss House taught English and history at Deshler High School for nine years. She started a school newspaper, reactivated the yearbook, and introduced a journalism class. She taught journalism for 30 years at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Ill., and also was adviser for the school newspaper and yearbook.
She was a member of Deshler United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She was president of the Chicago Scholastic Press Guild, secretary for the Illinois Teachers of Journalism Association, and in 1963 received a Cold Key award for meritorious service in high school journalism. She also was a member of the National Association of Scholastic Journalism and the Ohio and Illinois teachers associations.
Miss House was president of Henry County Retired Teachers Association, and was past patron of Deshler Chapter 68 OES. She was a member of Sauk Trail Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Association of University Women. She was active in community theater In Chicago Heights.
She graduated In 1924 from Deshler High School and attended Lake Erie College for two years. She received a bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and a master's degree from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Funeral services were held March 8 In the Dubbs-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler, with the Rev. Delmar Young officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.
