At this time, when least expected, a dark canopy of sorrow broods over this community again, in the tragic deaths of two of our most highly respected and endeared neighbors, friends and fellow citizens. Two most affectionate brothers, whose love and regard for each other was very like the love that existed between Jonothan and David of olden times.
Their filial affections, coupled with their contemporary and tragic deaths, marks a very remarkable coincidence, such as will not soon be forgotten.
David Howard and Moses Boyer were sons of James and Rebecca Boyer and born near Harrisburg, Pa., the former May 21st, 1858 and the latter September 4th, 1859.
The parents moved to Benton Ridge, O., when the two brothers were about 6 and 7 years old, respectively. Presumably the brothers met their fate August 23 or 24, 1921, the elder having attained the age of 63 years, 3 months and 2 days, and the younger 61 years, 11 months and 19 days.
The greater part of their lives has been as an open book to this community and their untimely deaths have caused unusual sorrow among all with whom they have trudged up and down the walks of life.
David Howard Boyer was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Agnes Butler May 2nd, 1879, she having preceded to the spirit world about 4 years ago. Their children are as follow: James A. Boyer, Deshler; Ben F., of Youngstown; Clyde O., Deshler; Chas. H., Deshler; Hattie Boyer-Young, of Deshler; Pearl, Deshler; and Essie, of Toledo. Ida, Jennie and Moses, deceased.
Eight children and ten grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate father and grandfather.
Moses Boyer was joined in marriage to Miss Maria Therissa Newell January 1st, 1891 and to this union were born seven children, namely: Flavey J. Boyer, Cleveland; Charles Ray, Deshler; Lerop [sic, probably Leroy] D., Deshler; Della M. Boyer Funchion, Deshler; Glen J., Fred D. and Hazel L., all of Deshler, and all at home.
Besides the mother and seven children, five grandchildren are left to mourn the immeasurable loss of one who was kind as a husband, indulgent as a father and grandfather.
The deceased have also left to mourn twin brothers, Cyrus, of Findlay, O., and Silas, of Jackson, Mich., two sisters, Emma Boyer Leatherman, Dayton, and Kathryn Boyer Crouse, Grass Lake, Mich.
Those who have gone on before are Christian and William, Hannah Boyer Fishel, Mary Boyer Speaker, and Rosella Boyer Hufford.
David was a member of the I.O.O.F. at Belmore and the virtues of Friendship, Love and Truth was his daily practive as the brothers will all attest. [Sentence as written.]
The general character of our deceased brothers is beyond reproach. Many years ago when in their youthful bloom, they were converted to the christian faith and they have been steadfastly on the way ever since.
None could doubt their sincerity. They were intensely religious by example as well as by precept.
... They were both members of the Deshler U. B. church...
