The Henry County Signal, 17 July 1879

THE CELEBRATED 68TH REGIMENT
Was organized about the 20th of November, 1861, at camp Latty near Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio under the following regimental officers: Col. Harry STEEDMAN, of Henry county, Lieut. Col. J. S. SNOOK, of Paulding county, Maj. R. K. SCOTT of Henry county, with Lieut. G. E. WELLES of Defiance, as Adjutant. The regiment rendezvoused at Napoleon until about the 24th day of January 1862, when it received orders to march to the front going by way of Columbus, Ohio, where they halted a few days to receive further orders, when they started for the South by the way of Cincinnati and Louisville, KY, and were on hand and took an active part in the battle and capture of Fort Donelson, TN, and from here was under Gen. GRANT through all his campaigns in the West, taking active part in the following engagements: Shiloh, siege of Corinth, Iuka, Mattamora, Thompson Hill, Fort Hill, Vicksburg, Monroe Raid, Bayou-Chitto, Meridian Raid, Big Shanty, Bushy Mountain, Kenesaw, Nickajack, siege of Atlanta, Atlanta July 21st, 22nd, 28th, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, Milledgeville, Savannah, Pocotalica, Salkehatchie, Orangeburg Charleston, Columbia, Cheraw, Bentonville, Raleigh, and concluding with the armistice and surrender of the rebel, Jo. JOHNSON and his whole army. From thence moved on via Richmond to Washington where they participated in the grand review by the President and heads of departments, after which they proceeded to Louisville, KY, where they were mustered out July 1865, after having served their country nobly for four years, during the most eventful period of our nation’s history.

FOX, John b. Wurtemberg, Ger. 1845, son of George & Mary (BROWNING) to Sandusky Co., OH in 1853, then Lucas Co., OH then here. Had 11 ch. John m. Sophie WESNER b. Crawford Co., OH 1855, dau. of Jacob & Lydia (BOWKER) from PA who had 9 ch. John & Sophie had Keturah, Marion, Hilanrah, Mary, Matilda, Neely & Bartha. George & Mary Fox members of the Lutheran Church.

    FRYSINGER, Andrew b. Ger. came to Marion Co., OH and then here. Andrew m. Magdelena HOFFMAN Nov. 21, 1830. Children were Matilda, Susanna, Levi, Lavina, Mary Anna, Lewis, Andrew Jackson, John M., Magdalena and Henry. Levi, a Civil War Veteran, purchased land in Sec. 19, Liberty Twp. in 1874.

    FREUND/FRIEND, Henry Sr. b. 1821 Prussia, Ger. m. Justine KRIDER b. 1816 Prussia, came to U.S. with year old son, William and settled in Galion, Crawford Co., OH. Henry Jr. was b. there. In 1851 they moved to Flatrock Twp. where Adam, George, Jake, Elizabeth and Catherine were born. Henry Sr. d. 1905. Justine d. 1888. Henry Jr. (1852-1922) m. Mary ORDWAY 1882 and had 4 ch. Jake ki11ed in Civil War. Adam (1861-1903) m. Amanda Ellen FARISON (1865-1946) in 1866, moved to KS & MI then settled here. Eight ch. George (1861-1918) m. Amanda STAUBER, moved to AR, ID, WA. Had 5 ch. Elizabeth (1866-1913) m. Andrew MOERDER, had 7 ch. Catherine (1857-1892) m. Phillip FAHRER, had 6 ch.

    FRAZIER, Horatio b. PA ca. 1838, father Floyd. Moved to Perry Co., OH ca. 1858 m. Eva KINDER. Two boys. Horatio & brother, Levi, died in Civil War. Eva b. ca. 1840 to David & Elizabeth. She m2 Lewis DOTSON & had 8 ch. David FRAZIER moved to Henry Co., m. Nettie WINNER Nov. 27, 1887 & had 6 girls. Nettie Winner b. 6 Oct 1869 in Richfield Twp. Henry Co. to Taylor & Sally YARINGTON WINNER, both b. Logan Co., OH. They had 6 girls. Ina Frazier RAUSCH b. July 30, 1889 near Westhope, OH to David & Nettie Frazier. She m. Carl RAUSCH Oct. 20, 1912, d. 1974. 5 boys.

    LEAHY, John Sr. b. 1830 Ireland. Came to OH age 14. He m. Mary HARNETT b. 1843. Their son, John Jr. b. 1860 d. 1895, m. Mary A. O’HEARN dau. of Edward b. 1820 and Catherine QUIGLEY b. 1838, both b. Henry Co. Mary A. b. 1863, d. 1918.
