HENRY COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR

According to an article written by Edmund G. Peper for the Henry County History books published in 1976, ten percent of the population of Henry County served in the military forces to preserve the union. There are no known residents who served for the confederacy.
Some men from this area joined the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in April of 1861. They fought in three major battles: Philippi, West Virginia; Laurel Hill, WV; and Carrick’s Ford, WV. Because they originally enlisted for three months, they were mustered out in August of 1861. Most members re-enlisted for three years and Company D was made up of Henry County men.
The 38th Regiment of O. V. I. was formed at Defiance between July 1861 and April 1862 to serve three years. They took part in the following battles: Perryville, KY; Stone River, TN; Hoover’s Gap, TN; Chickamauga, GA; Mission Ridge, TN; Kenesaw Mountain, GA; Atlanta, GA; Utoy Creek, GA; and Jonesboro, GA. Company B consisted entirely of men from Henry County.
The 68th O. V. I. Regiment has been considered the Henry County regiment although there were companies from Defiance, Paulding, Williams and Fulton Counties. It formed in November, 1861 in Napoleon, OH at Camp Latta. Besides being responsible for building roads, bridges and entrenchments, the regiment worked to build the Lake Providence Canal. They fought at Thompson’s Hill, MS; Raymond, MS; Jackson, MS; Champion Hills, MS; Vicksburg, MS (siege of); Clinton, MS; Kenesaw Mountain, GA; Nickajack Creek, GA; Atlanta, GA; Jonesboro, GA; and Lovejoy Station, GA. The term of enlistment was three years.
The Official Roster of The Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of The Rebellion 1861-1866 published by The Werner Co., 1893 has several sections. For instance, there is a Roll of Honor at the back of each volume listing soldiers who died, remarks (if they died of disease or wounds, etc.), and sometimes where they were buried. There is a section called “Addenda to the Roll of Honor” giving further listings of those who died. “Errata and Addenda” corrects the spelling of names and places and adds information. Don’t forget to check the cavalry, artillery divisions, and sharpshooters. Sharpshooters were recruited from regular infantry companies, one from Hancock Co.
