Stop by and fill out a membership form. Pick up some publications and save on postage. Make your purchases for Christmas! Neighboring counties will also have displays and publications for sale.

BY THE WAY, if you can volunteer a few hours at our table, we’d appreciate it if you would contact Kathy Bishop to get on the schedule.

SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERING

Election of officers is coming soon. We’re looking for willing hands and hearts to take a couple of positions.

QUERY

DAY
Susan Day married Daniel Shafer 1871, Henry Co. Census of 1880 says he was widowed. Would like to correspond with any researchers of a Day family to see from what family she came. Possible she married a Day and Daniel Shafer was her second marriage.
–Donald G. Shafer, Toledo, OH 43514-5424

SPECIAL NOTE

The Henry County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will celebrate its tenth year of existence this Fall. We’ve come a long way, baby! There are over 50 publications to prove how hard we have been working. We also have a First Families of Henry County program in effect. We accept Henry County related queries for our newsletter and our corresponding secretary does limited research at no charge. (Donations are requested for copying and postage.) Our goal in every endeavor is to make information available to YOU. Please send us your suggestions for improvement. Even better, volunteer your time to help.

STRIKES INDIAN BURIAL GROUND

While the workmen, under Mr. McKennery, were grading the south river road near the Kigar cemetery [Ed. note: We believe this to be near the KRUGAR Cemetery on St. Rt. 110 just west of Rd. 7.], Friday, they struck what they think is the remnant of an old Indian (sic) burial ground.

The skeletons of two indians were unearthed. One was of a woman and the other was of a man; both skeletons are in a perfect state of preservation and by their dimensions, both of the indians must have been at the very least, 6 feet in height. Sumner Tabler, who has in his possession one of the skulls, says it is in such perfect condition that all the teeth are intact and other portions are in just as fine shape.

The contractor expects to find many more skeletons and other relics of the balmy days when “Mad Anthony” chased the howling red-skins helter-skelter down the wild, yet beautiful Maumee. Many theories are advanced as to the finding of the skeletons. The most plausible one is that this must have been the place where the indians made one of their desperate stands. This theory is a strong one owing to the natural lay of the land, which is rolling and with many deep ravines. To the indian this was a perfect place to kill and scalp the “pale face” and it would not be surprising if many war-like relics were found.
