FROM THE TYPEWRITER OF THE TEMPORARY NEWSLETTER EDITOR

This month marks the third anniversary of the Henry County Genealogical Society. The organizational meeting of the Society was held on September 15, 1986. Twenty people attended. At this time we have 68 memberships. The two newest are listed elsewhere in this letter.

As with all organizations there is a dedicated group of core workers who gladly give time and talent to “The cause.” One core worker sorely needed is a newsletter editor. We have had able editors in the past. Today we are putting out the call for someone to take over this position.

Without a permanent editor the voice of the HCGS cannot be heard. Without an editor all members suffer. Without an editor other genealogy societies that receive our newsletter suffer. And most of all the society as a whole suffers. This month’s issue will be abbreviated because of this lack.

CEMETERY COMMITTEE REPORT

The cemetery inscriptions and publication committee is making great progress with our cemetery inscriptions project and our next book will be ready for sale by December 1 as scheduled.

Our first publication was Pleasant Township in early 1988 and then Marion and Monroe Townships in one book in June 1989. The next book will be a combination of Bartlow and Richfield Townships and is due out by December 1, 1989. The following Flatrock Township book is scheduled for June 1, 1990.

The other townships will be Ridgeville, Liberty, Freedom, Washington, Damascus, Harrison and Napoleon. Many of the cemeteries in some of these townships have been copied and will be updated just prior to publication.

Our goal is to publish a book every six months until these remaining townships are completed. They will be done either in a separate book or a combination of two adjoining townships.
Several members, their spouses or friends, have done a great job in doing copying of these cemetery inscriptions. We recently had a work meeting at a cemetery in Napoleon Township and had a very good turn out. We hope to plan an all day work day on a Saturday in the spring to do another cemetery.

A big “thank you” to everyone who is working on this project.

As many of you, who have gone to cemeteries for information pertaining to genealogy, know that the older stones continue to deteriorate and many cemeteries have been vandalized. The names and dates on these stones are then lost and a vital part of that information is gone, so the preservation of cemetery inscriptions needs to be made with a written record for our future generations.
