MEETINGS

November 15, 1999, Monday, 7:00 pm

First Families will be honored. “Schnitzel Bank” (carving bench) wood carving program by Larry Kruse. Pot luck supper. Beverage, tableware and dessert provided. Please bring one hot and one cold dish to pass.

December 1999

No meeting.

SURNAMES

As usual, our January issue will list surnames being researched by our members. If you did not include a list of surnames with your membership form, please send a list at this time. We ask that you limit the list to 20 names so that we have room for everyone’s.

WE ARE PUBLISHING…

The Henry County Genealogical Society has published 1857 Tax Duplicates. It shows name, description of property by section and township, and chattel taxes. This book contains one of the earliest county lists of names available. Cost is $10.00 plus $2.00 postage and handling.

CHECK YOUR ATTIC

One of our members, Suzanne Badenhop, has offered to translate any obituaries found in German newspapers which used to be published in this area. If you have clippings from Deutcher Demokrat (Napoleon) or The Defiance Herald, please let us know at Information Request and we’ll tell you what to do. Any of our officers would be glad to forward copies also. If we get a good response we will be able to publish a collection of the translations, but we haven’t heard from you!

OPEN HOUSE

The Henry County Historical Society is holding an open house at the museum November 14 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Some of our members will be there to answer genealogical questions.

ANCESTORS CLAIM SHEEP LOSSES

Record of Sheep Claims, No. 1 1892-1897 came to the HCGS from the Henry County Courthouse and is indexed by township. There was a county tax on dogs. Claims were made for sheep injured or destroyed by dogs and any money left over in the fund at the end of the year was given to the school fund. Witnesses were paid a small amount.
