Editor’s Notes

Happy Birthday! Our society is now 1 year old. On Sept. 15, 1987, 20 people met at the library with the hopes or forming a Henry Co. Genealogical Society. By Jan. 1, 1987, the deadline for charter members, there were 48 members. As of Nov. 1, 1987 we now have a membership of 66, with new members being added all the time.

A lot of hard work has been done and a lot of time has been given by the volunteers that things get done. The cemetery committee has been busy with copying cemeteries; the obituary committee has been copying obituaries from the newspapers and putting them in note books; the surname cards are being filed; a bake sale was held; the newsletter gets published bi-monthly; plans are being discussed for future projects. Yes, a lot has been done in the past 12 months, but a lot is yet to be done in the future to preserve the history of the ancestors of Henry Co. We have only just begun! My pleas for queries and articles for the newsletter have been met with good results. But there are a lot of members who have not replied. One query in the newsletter, your surname cards or your 5 generation charts on file at the library may be just the thing to find that missing link you are looking for. Isn’t it worth a try?

The September 21 meeting of the society was a business and workshop meeting with 18 members attending. The Bake Sale had only nine participants, so the hat was passed and the sale thus totaled $86.50.

Members are urged to send in surname lists for inclusion in the newsletter. Location of the town Lena was discussed. It was at one time located in Fulton Co. which borders next to Henry Co. All Henry Co. obituaries, copies, or typescripts of such are requested for the obit file. Inquiry was made, “Does anyone have knowledge of the Napoleon German language paper (1930s???).”
Richfield, Monroe, Bartlow and Pleasant Township cemeteries have been read. Several possible complications in recording data were asked about. Motion was made to check the cost of publishing the McClure History formerly published by the Wood Co. Society. Plans were made
to frame the chapter charter and display it in the library. Reports were made about the trips to the OGS headquarters and the Defiance mini convention. Conventions packets were given out for $1 donation. Mary Jo Cunningham, recording secretary.

At our Oct. meeting, held at the Henry Co. Courthouse, Judge Rohrs told the members present what records were available for research and where they could be found. This information is included in this newsletter.

JAN. & FEB. 1988 NEWSLETTER

Henry County Recorder

The County Recorder records all properties and everything and anything that pertains to property. We do searches for lending institutions, be it financing statements or property searches. We have the information on all properties dating back to 1835 and provide this service to many genealogists. The attorneys and their secretaries or individuals interested in property use our records for information on particular parcels of land.

We record and file deeds, mortgages, land contracts, financing statements, oil and gas leases, soldiers discharges and separation papers, powers of attorney, mechanics liens, partnerships, cancellations of various documents, bill of sales, delinquent federal tax liens, delinquent personal tax liens, workman’s compensation liens, and corrupt activity liens, also, easements and right of ways. We also have a miscellaneous records book that records any documents to clear a title on property.

We have plat maps that are made available to those searching property.

All the services are mandated by law and the fees charged for these services are also set by law.

This money is turned over to our Treasurer to invest.

I have two staff members and our main objective is to provide the public with quick and efficient service.

We also invite all of the people in and around Henry County to visit our Courthouse; it is for public view.

We are fortunate to be one of the few offices that is self-supporting, and this helps the general fund.

Copies are $0.50 per page.
