Some regiments are given and a few companies, but most entries carry no designation. Amounts paid vary, usually from $4 to $20 and are paid to a township clerk for distribution. Queries

LAMBERT, HOUSE, GRIBBELL, GRIVBEL, GRIBEL

Searching for descendants of Joseph and Barbara Lambert, both b. ca. 1803 lived Erie Co., OH. They had two known surviving children, Joseph Lambert Jr. and Mary Ann Lambert who m. George Lewis House and lived in Deshler, Henry Co., where George started a hardware store ca. late 1880s.

Also, searching for info on the Gribbell (var. sp.) family. George Grivbel/Grible lived Hancock Co., his sons John and Sephus/Cephus/Sigfreid owned land and lived in Deshler, OH ca. 1880s. Cephus then went to CO. George moved to IA. It’s obvious why this has been a difficult family for me to trace when they can’t decide on what their names are! Any help would be appreciated.

The first issue of the Napoleon Star newspaper we have on microfilm is 1 Apr 1857, Vol.1 No.2. The editors were Wm. A. CHOATE and George WEIMER.

From the NAPOLEON STAR, 15 Apr 1857

John POWELL, Esq., wholesale and retail dealer in staves and lumber, has furnished us with
an absir et from which we learn accurately the amount of his business during the last year.

He has, within the last twelve months, purchased about fourteen hundred thousand staves, net count, paying for the same not less than $8,000. (Unreadable) of these have been bought since the first oflast September. The amount of $18,000 distributed among the farmers of our county is certainly a matter of importance to them, as well as benefit. We are not aware how many have been purchased by other stave merchants but we presume they have dpne an extensive business.

The Canada and New York Lumbering Co.’ s under the supervision of Messrs. Russell
CHESBRO, and WILNAMS have been doing an extensive business in the ship timber line.
Millions of feet have been got out by them. Besides, our land owners throughout the county
have more or less got out saw logs to supply our different mills and in addition have also, in part, stoked some of the principal mills of Toledo, Maumee, Waterville, and Gilead. Such
opportunities as our county affords for the sale of timber upon lands, is not often presented to the inhabitants of a new country.

While so many (unreadable) [ men] are seeking the cold and bleak prairies of the West,
some few stop among us when they find a soil unsurpassed for [growing?] where they can
relieve any financial embarrassment, while opening their farms, by landing a ready sale for their
timber. That advantage which northwestern Ohio possesses for new beginners, in point of
markets and otherwise, cannot be overstated and we are often astonished to see such a wholesale rush to the far west, while such advantages and opportunities are here presented for their consideration.

THOUSANDS VISIT GEHRETT HOME IN DESHLER TO PAY RESPECTS TO PHYSICIAN WHO FAITHFULLY SERVED FOR 45 YEARS

It will be many years before Deshler and vicinity can reconcile itself to its great loss, sustained in the death of Dr. Theodore M. GEHRETT, who passed away last Thursday evening at about 9:00 at his cottage on the Maumee river, near Grand Rapids…

In the early years of his practice in Henry County the doctor experienced the difficulties attendant when nearly every road was just a turn pike of clay, the native soil, and many were just openings cut through the woods, wet and grown with underbrush and swale grass. It was over many of these roads that the doctor was forced to travel, often when the night was dark and rain pouring in torrents, but never a call did he refuse. He was always ready to go to relieve the sick or to dress the wounds of the injured, rich and poor alike. He would hurry just as fast, travel just as far, brave any storm, winter or summer, to be at the bedside of a sick person in the family of one unable to pay as he would when offered a large fee. His heart was in his work. He loved to do good: his heart throbbed with sympathy when others suffered; he was glad to be able to relieve pain, to administer to the sick and to allay the fears of family and friends. He was as tender in his ministrations as a mother, or if needed, be severe and demand that his instructions be followed. He was quick to understand the situation and to adopt the method best suited to the environment of any particular case.

As a surgeon Dr. GEHRETT had few peers in the state. He was frequently called by other physicians to perform operations and he visited hospitals at Toledo, Findlay, Lima, Fostoria, Tiffin and Napoleon. Hospital surgeons marveled at his skill and congratulated themselves that such a man was available when needed.

No wonder then that his practice extended over a vast territory and that he was in constant demand. It just naturally follows that our busy Doctor GEHRETT was loved and respected by thousands of people that he had been able to help. It was a special privilege for Deshler to be the home of this wonderful practitioner, and we shared him with surrounding territory. Folks crune from remote states to be treated by him or to have .. an operation. And so, at his death, not only Deshler mourns at his passing, but his going was a shock to all Northwestern Ohio.

Dr. Theodore M. GEHRETT was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, November 27, 1854, and at the time of his death was in his 71st year…. He located in Deshler in 1880. He was married to Miss Alice THRAPP in 1879. She died in 1909 leaving him two daughters, Mrs. Coral WILLIAM and Mrs. Madge (Manley) ROTHENBERGER of Holgate. He was married to Miss Laveda TODD in 1911, and she survives him. Also surviving are two grandchildren; two brothers, Wilson S. GEHRETT, Toledo, and Jacob GEHRETT, Wauseon; one sister, Mrs. George ROWE of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. [The tribute to Dr. Gehrett goes on for many columns in the newspaper. He was a much beloved member of the community, and served as President of the Deshler State Bank as well as two terms in the Ohio Legislature, among other honors.]

Dr. Bernard Feorge Locates in Deshler

Dr. Bernard GEORGE has decided to hang out his shingle for the practice of medicine in Deshler. He has rented rooms of the American Legion Post, over the Farmers’ Store Company, and is now ready to contribute his skill toward maintaining the health of this community. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Belmore and graduated from Leipsic High School. His wife is a daughter of Dr. W. C. MILLER, well known Belmore physician.

Ken Thompson Translations for German Scrapbooks at Library

Several years ago a three-volume set of family scrapbooks was donated to our society. The items were cut from at least one German-language newspaper from this area, but not dated or identified. It is believed the articles came from Der Defiance Herold (1895 – 1920) and included items regarding families in western Henry Co. and in Twps. transferred to Defiance Co. Ken Thompson is translating the items for us. An index is being published as space permits. Vol. I translation is completed.
