Veterans Information

Prompted by a letter from one of our members, I called the Henry County Veterans Service and spoke with Gary McMaster. He has some of the Civil War Rosters, a Mexican War Roster, the World War I Rosters, and the Roster of the Spanish-American War. He is willing to work with people who stop in at his office in the Hahn Center across the street from the courthouse, but please call before going as he is not in the office all the time. Keep in mind that he does not have (and the government will not release) all the information on veterans from more recent wars-WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He does have free magazines which advertise reunions of units from these wars and sometimes information can be traced through them.

GERMAN DEFINITIONS

HOF – The word Hof pertains to the main house on a piece of property. However it can also be understood as the whole farm entity. It was used for Vollhof, Halbhofe and for the Kote or Kotner Hof

VOLLMEIER – or MEIER – is a serf, with limited freedom, holding a contract from the local liege lord, based on tithes and other taxes plus the Corvee duty. It was understood that the liege lord owned the land, but that the serf owned certain limited rights in the buildings and equipment. The Vollmeier farm was usually about 30 to 90 morgan land with privileges in the communal land.

MORGAN – a land measure of .61775 acre. Four morgan = 1 hectare. One hectare = 2.471 acres.
