TRIP PROVES FRUITFUL

On a research trip last Fall, Lucille VanScoyoc and Phyllis LaRue went to Brey Cemetery in Napoleon Township. At the time we recorded this cemetery in July 1989, vandals had been there ahead of us and had tipped over a couple of the bigger stones and some of the smaller old ones were broken.
At some time between then and now the trustees have put in several new footers and reset the stones. We were now able to see the engraving. However, some of the broken stones are no longer there. The new information we were able to record is listed below.

FROM THE DESHLER FLAG, 19 Feb 1897

A notable event in the pioneer history of Seneca Co. was the celebration Monday of the 100th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Hannah Holmes-Sherman, at her home in Eden township, between Melmore and Mexico. Her twin sister died several years ago at the age of 90. We are indebted to Dr. J. W. Holmes, of South Washington Street, Deshler, for a large number of facts regarding the history of Mrs. Sherman’s family. “The maiden name of the lady was Hannah Holmes. She was born at Holmesville, Chenango Co., NY, on 1 Feb 1797. The family is of pure English origin, and was numbered among the vanguard of the pioneers who settled the New England colonies.
“The earliest historical trace of the family in England is in the time when a person went by one name, which was usually derived from his occupation. Thus the earliest known ancestor of Mrs. Sherman was given a patent by an English King to drain and possess certain swampy lands. In Anglo-Saxon language this land was called a ‘holm.’ This gave the family its name.
“When emigration began to the newly opened coast of America, three Holmes brothers left Merrie England and landed in the colonies. One settled in Manhattan, one in Massachusetts, the third in Connecticut. To one of these three branches every American Holmes can trace back his descent. The Connecticut Holmes were the ancestors of Hannah Holmes. Her father was born in Chatham, NY. Oliver Wendall Holmes was a distinguished scion of the Massachusetts branch.
“In August, 1825, Hannah was married to Japhes Sherman. They came to OH immediately, and settled on the farm in Eden Twp., which has ever since remained in the family. It is owned by Randolph H. Holmes, her nephew, and there the aged lady makes her home. She has been a widow for 54 years. She was the mother of 5 children. The army claimed the lives of 2 of them. Hiram lives in Kansas; Lorenzo, her eldest son (age 75) lives in Iowa. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and other relatives were present at the birthday celebration. Mrs. Joseph Brown, of Sycamore, a niece, was there with her husband, who is 83 years old.
“The father of Anson Burlingame, the famous U.S. minister to China, was a nephew of Mrs. Sherman. Anson lived in Eden Twp., and the future Minister Burlingame, and the future General Gibson were boys together. Mrs. Sherman, the subject of this sketch is the grandmother of Mrs. Frank Sherman, who lives at Belmore.”
