SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

Our thanks to Phyllis LaRue who has been working hard to line up programs for the coming year. She has invited some excellent speakers and come up with several other good ideas.
Now, we need YOU! Some of our speakers are coming from quite a distance. We would like to have more than six or seven people in the audience. Please join us for our meetings! Invite your friends. Visitors are always welcome.

If you have any other suggestions about meeting topics or speakers, please let us know. We will be glad to add to our list of program ideas.

ADDITIONS TO THE COLLECTION

Our thanks to:

Sue Leist Parsons, who has donated Leist and Allied Families 1690 – 1990

and Glen and Ruth Kieffer, who have donated Erie County, Ohio, Cemetery Census before 1909.

Our collection is held at the Edwin wood Memorial Library, 208 North East Ave., Deshler. When you visit, please remember that the librarians, though interested in genealogy and very helpful, are also running a public library.

Another recent acquisition is the 1920 census of Ohio on microfilm which has been purchased by our society. All but two rolls of microfilm have arrived at this time.

Jane Van Dragt has sent us five letters written by Cary Emmet McCann to his family in Napoleon during the Civil War. He was a private in Co. F 14th Reg. OVM. Enrolled 19 Apr 1861 – discharged 13 Aug 1861. Born: Knox Co., OH. At discharge age 20, 5′ 8 3/4″, dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair. Occupation before enrollment, a medical student. He was appointed hospital steward of the 68th OVVI 9 Oct 1864, then 2nd Lieutenant, 18th Reg. OVI 11 Jan 1865 and finally discharged 10 July 1865. (She also has a diary of Eugene B. Harrison for the year 1863. He was a physician and was at Vicksburg.)

Some excerpts from Cary E. McCann’s letters:

Jan 4, 1864
“I have not reenlisted yet nor shall I until I have greater inducements ($). The regt was mustered into the U. S. Army for three years more service, ‘which looks too big for me’ soon again as long as there are so many able bodied men at home that have not seen any service and are no better than I am as long as I behave myself respectable.
“I suppose that you have had a fine time visiting among your relatives and friends. I should like to have been with you at Uncle Toms, but I would not want to visit any of the rest because they dont seem to think enough of a fellow to write to him…
“Ezra Dodd was here to day, he is well and looks fine and is the same boy that he used to be. We had a fine time talking of our school boy days.”
(More reference to relatives who don’t write.) “How does Elmos look? I should like to see him and see what kind of a boy he has got to be since he has become a farmer. I want all of you to send me all your Photographs if you can…
“E. B. H. is well and so am I. . . . My love to Mary and all friends—”
This letter was written to his mother, Amy Bell McCann of Napoleon. Mary is his sister, wife of E. B. H. (Dr. Eugene B. Harrison). Elmos is his brother.

Nov. 25, 1863
“Dr. Tyler left for home yesterday, discharged from the service ($2,000). . . I want you Mother to have me some nice shirts (ladies cloth) made up of something nearly the same stuff & color as those Mary made Dr. only much larger in width & length without colars, (sic) so that if I come home I can look respectable…
“Capt Poe’s little boy is some better but very dangerously sick yet so Dr. E. B. H. says.”

Vicksburg Oct 21, 1863
(The letter begins with quite a scolding to his mother for her “Secessionist” letter to him.) “Parry, Suling, & Dr. Tyler & others arrived safely here to night after traveling 8 days & they are all doing well sweetly sleeping in my tent to night while I am writing. . .” (He discusses the possibility of his promotion to steward.) “A good many complain with very sore feet after marching so hard.”

CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE RECORDS

We continue our listing of Civil War Discharge Records taken from Vol. 1 Soldier’s Discharge Records at the Recorder’s Office, Henry County Court House. The initials OVI refer to Ohio Volunteer Infantry; OVVI refers to Ohio Veterans Volunteer Infantry. Some additional information may appear in the courthouse records.
In the attestations accompanying the records it is not always clear whether the soldier resides in a town or township; for example, Napoleon. When two spellings are given for a name, one usually occurred in the index and the other in the record itself. Question marks indicate that is was not possible to read the handwriting. Records copied by Karen Sunderman.
