ACQUISITIONS

The Henry County Genealogical Society has recently spent about $1,000 for new acquisitions — just in time for you to visit the Edwin Wood Memorial Library in Deshler on your summer vacation and do some research! From OGS we acquired Ohio Towns and Townships (we will be updating the information on Henry County soon) and Ohio Cemeteries plus Cemetery Addendum.
New CD’s for the computer include Ohio Soldiers Roster WWI, Social Security Index, Ohio Marriages, and Passenger and Immigration List of NY.
Microfilms purchased are Ohio 1900 Census Records, the additional available church records of Henry County including St. John Lutheran of Freedom Twp. and New Bavaria Emanuel United Church of Christ. The Toledo Catholic Diocese records are in the process of being prepared on microfilm and the Henry County films will be purchased when available. We also purchased microfilm rolls 86-129, completing our collection of The Northwest Signal. We have also purchased both microfilm rolls of the McClure newspaper.
Books purchased for counties/townships bordering Henry County are: Defiance County 1870 Census Index and Defiance County 1845-1995 Probate Index; Wood County: Grand Rapids and Weston Township Cemetery Books; and Putnam County Cemetery Book.
These are all available for research at Edwin Wood Memorial Library, Deshler.

We voted to place a copy of each of the books the Henry County Society has published in the OGS Library in Mansfield, OH. This will be accomplished soon. If you make a trip to Mansfield, you will have access to all the information we’ve gathered. These books are also in the Edwin Wood Memorial Library (attached to the school) in Deshler.

BIRTHS IN HENRY COUNTY 1865-1908

These births are recorded as what appear to be birth certificates in a binder (Vol. A) in the Probate Office at the Henry County Court House. They are evidently corrections and late registrations that do not appear in the regular records. Some were filed as late as 1940.
There are other late registrations beginning with Vol. 6 which were recorded in 1941 or later, but in which the births occurred as early as 1898. Some births may have been in other counties and not registered in the county of the mother’s residence (i.e. Henry Co.) as required by law before 1909. After that time, all births records were kept by the Health Dept. and also forwarded to Columbus. Probate Clerk Marilyn Clark was very helpful in digging out this information. Thanks!

OBITUARY (from Napoleon paper unidentified and undated – the editor is guessing from the print)

SKATES – At the residence of her son-in-law, Levi FRYSINGER, of Liberty township, on Friday evening, Nov. 17th, 1893, Sara A. SKATES, aged 82 years and 20 days. Her disease was cancer.
Her maiden name was Sarah A. BOWAN. She was born in Franklin County, OH, Oct. 29, 1811. She removed with her parents to Marion county and was there united in marriage to Patrick Skates in the year 1829. From Marion county Mr. Skates and family removed to Seneca county where they resided until 1847, then came to the wilds of Henry county, Liberty township, where they resided until death.
Grandma Skates was the mother of thirteen children – seven of whom preceded her. She was grandmother of thirty seven and great-grandmother of fifty-three children. The husband and father departed this life nearly nine years ago.
Grandmother Skates, as she was familiarly called, became a Christian in early life; she was in the services of the Lord for sixty-eight years. She was one of the most prominent and leading members of the Church of God at the time of her death. She was honored and respected by all who knew her, far and near, and she left the brightest evidence that she was gone to that land where the weary are forever at rest.
The funeral services were held at the Olive Chapel on Sunday afternoon. Elder L. Alleman officiating, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Morrison Cemetery.
