FROM THE HENRY COUNTY SIGNAL, 17 July 1879

THE CELEBRATED 68th REGIMENT was organized about the 20th of November, 1981, at Camp Latty near Napoleon, Henry County, Ohio, under the following regimental officers: Col. The regiment rendezvoused at Napoleon until. about the 24th day of January 1862, when it received orders to march to the front going by way of Columbus, Ohio, where they halted a few days to receive further orders, when they started for the South by way of Cincinnati and Louisville, KY, and were on hand and took an active part in the battle and capture of Fort Donelson, TN, and from there was under Gen. Grant through all his campaign in the West, taking active part in the following engagements: Shiloh, siege of Corinth, Iuka, Mattamora, Thompson Hill, Fort Hill, Vicksburg, Monroe Raid, Bayou-Chitto, Meridian Raid, Big Shanty, Bushy Mountain, Kenesaw, Nickajack, siege of Atlanta, Atlanta July 21, 22nd, and 28th, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, Milledgeville, Savannah, Pocotalico, Salkehatchie, Orangeburg, Charleston, Columbia, Cheraw, Bentonville, Raleigh, and concluding with the armistice and surrender of the rebel, Jo. NATURALIZATION RECORDS

About 1 1/2 years ago I was allowed to copy several books of naturalization records found in the Clerk of Courts office in the courthouse. These included “Declaration of Intention”, “Petition for Naturalization”, and “Certificate of Naturalization” records. Sometimes included in these records is a physical description, wife, children (possibly their ages), place of foreign residence, place of current residence, and arrival date and port. Margaret Kelly has now abstracted the genealogical information from these records and I will publish it in this and future newsletters. No one seems to know why these volumes were not in the Probate Court Records, which is where most of the naturalization records are kept. –Karen Sunderman
