NAMING PATTERNS
From Ancestry Trails, April 1993

This conventional naming pattern of children can be a great help to a genealogist if the order of birth is known. Earlier children who died young will effect the pattern. The eldest son named after the paternal grandfather. The second son named after the maternal grandfather. The third son named after the father.

The eldest daughter named after the maternal grandmother. The second daughter named after the paternal grandmother. The third daughter named after the mother.

If maternal and paternal grandfathers had the same name, there would be a break in the naming pattern. If a child died in infancy another child in the family might be given the same name. Children might also be named after godparents, a minister, doctor, or other prominent person.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING A MAIDEN NAME

Look at her death certificate and her children’s death certificates. Check newspaper obituaries for the whole family and her children’s marriage certificates, wills and deeds as witnesses may be related, or in case she inherited land. Check public church records. Look at records microfilmed by LDS, library manuscript collections, the International Genealogical Index (IGI), divorce papers, newspaper indexes, county histories/biographies, military pension applications, widow’s affidavits, bounty land warrants, family genealogies (check families her children married into). Check the Survey of American Genealogical Periodicals Indexes by Kip Sperry. Sometimes a census will mention a mother-in-law. Try a son’s middle name or a (county?) society surname index and charts.

The above was given to me by one of our members. I apologize that I cannot ascribe it to the proper source.
