REMEMBER to use your membership number when corresponding with us. This is especially helpful when you renew your membership or change your address, but it also allows other members to check your surname list when you have a query in the newsletter. Membership numbers are assigned chronologically as each member joins, so we do not keep an up-to-date alphabetized membership list. Three different people handle correspondence, membership renewals, and outgoing newsletters, a fourth person handles the surname list and queries, so help us out on this, please. Your membership number can be found just above your name on the mailing label, preceded by zeroes. The expiration date of your membership is now on the mailing label as well.

FROM THE DESHLER FLAG, 17 Mar 1927: CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS BURIED AT GRELTON

Orange Jackson Richard was born in Milan, Erie County, Ohio, April 1, 1818, where he spent most of his childhood and early manhood. He died March 17, 1927, aged 79 years, 11 months and 24 days. During the Civil War he enlisted in the hundred day service and served till the end of the war. He was united in marriage to Jeannette McDonald, Mar. 26, 1871, and to this union were born eleven children–four of whom have preceded him in death.
The mother passed away November 18, 1920 at the family home in Deshler, Ohio, a few months before their golden wedding anniversary. He was converted in his early youth and joined the Quaker church but later transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church. He leaves to mourn his departure seven children, twenty-seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and two brothers and many other relatives. The funeral was conducted at Grelton on Thursday by Rev. Barnes, interment being made at Grelton.

FROM THE DESHLER FLAG, 7 Mar 1927

Forty-four relatives and friends helped Grandma Rayle observe her eighty-third birthday anniversary on Sunday, March 13th. The table was centered with a large cake, 16 by 20 inches, boquets (sic) of roses being the decorations. Those who came to help celebrate were her brother, Amos Watkins and wife of North Baltimore; and her other brother, Clem Watkins of Bluffton; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wilkins and sons of Hamler; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams and children, Cygnet; Mrs. Nellie Brown, Norwalk; Mrs. Oakle Winkle and children, North Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rayle, Findlay; Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Rayle, Rawson; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Apple and son, Bloomdale; Mr. Dan Shroyer, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Holder and son, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Holder and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Blake and son, Mr. and Mrs. John Sellers, Ora Dewese, all of Deshler, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Reese and two sons and Miss Evosa Winkle of Leipsic, were also present. After a very enjoyable day and dinner, the guests separated for their several homes, wishing Grandma Rayle many more happy birthdays.

IN REGARD TO. . .

…the obituary books published by the Henry County Genealogical Society. We know that some of the obituaries don’t reproduce well because the microfilm may be faint or for other reasons. If you ever find one that you especially want and it is not very readable, just write to our corresponding secretary, Phyllis LaRue, and she will try to get a better copy of it for you.

ALSO, PLEASE REMEMBER. . .

…to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) when you write to us or to anyone else about genealogy. It is simply the polite thing to do. Also, it saves our chapter postage money that we can use to buy books and other materials. When Phyllis does research for our members she does not charge for what she does, but DONATIONS are GRATEFULLY accepted for copying and postage costs. (And by the way, many, many thanks are due to Phyllis for the hours she spends researching and answering the letters we receive and also to Lucille VanScoyoc for the time she spends packaging and mailing books.)
