CATHOLIC CHURCH

The Catholic church is another structure of which our people, regardless of religious denominations, feel justly proud. The building is situated on Monroe Street, corner of Clinton. It is of imposing dimensions, built of stone and brick, and the large golden cross is 180 feet above the ground. The interior is of gothic finish and the furniture, pipe organ, etc., are both beautiful and costly.

From HISTORY OF THE MAUMEE RIVER BASIN by Charles Slocum

John FOX, a well-known citizen of Monroe Township, was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, August 22, 1845, the son of George and Mary (BROWNING) FOX, both also natives of Germany. The father, who was a farmer, came to America in 1853 and, settling in Sandusky County, Ohio, bought 36 acres of partly cleared land. Thirteen years later he removed to Lucas County, this state, where he leased a farm for 1 14 years, and then came to Monroe Township, Henry County, where they remained until their deaths, the father dying in 1878 and the mother in 1875. They were members of the Lutheran church, and were the parents of eleven children, six of whom died in Germany, the others being John, Mary, Fred, Samuel and Lizzie.

The subject of this sketch remained with his parents as long as they lived and has always followed farming, doing also some timbering as a side line, and being successful in both lines. In his early youth he worked out by the month to some extent, saving enough money to enable him to buy 49 acres of land in Monroe Township, to which he has added from time to time until now he is the owner of 158 acres of fine land, nearly all under cultivation.

Mr. FOX married Miss Sophie WESNER, who was born in Crawford County, Ohio, in 1855, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (BOWKER) WESNER, natives of Pennsylvania and the parents of 9 children, Sarah, Caroline, William, Sophie, Jacob, Isaac, Israel, Epsie and Wallace. To Mr. and Mrs. FOX have been born 7 children, Lizzie, who died in infancy, Keturah, Marion, Hilanrah, Mary Matilda, Neely and Bartha, all at home. In politics Mr. FOX is a Democrat and has served as supervisor of Monroe Township. He was formerly a member of Hamler Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, but has withdrawn from that body. He is well known and is liked by all who know him.

Harry FAYRAM, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Deshler, Ohio, is a native of England, bom in the city of Sheffield on March 15, 1860, the son of Amos and Martha (BLACKMORE) FAYRAM, natives respectively of London and Yorkshire, England. The family came to America in 1861, locating first at Quebec, Canada, subsequently removing to Hamilton, and later to Toronto. In 1869 they came to Detroit, Michigan, where the father has since followed his profession, that of expert accountant. The mother died in 1892.

The subject was educated in the public schools of Canada and Detroit, and at the age of 15 years he entered the employ of Lawrence & Co., manufacturers of picture frames and mouldings, with which concern he remained until 1888. In the fall of that year he came to Deshler, then but a small village, and engaged in the hotel business as proprietor of the Ross House, then the leading hotel in the town and still in existence.

In 1898 the new hotel building was completed [later known as the DESHLER Hotel, which was demolished in the Fall of 2008—ed.j and Mr. FAYRAM at once secured a lease on it, giving it his name, and has since successfully conducted it as the leading hotel in this part of the county. The building is a modern one, three stories in height, containing sixty rooms, all elegantly furnished, and the hotel sustains an enviable reputation. Mr. FAYRAM is also to some extent interested in farming, owning and operating a good farm of 80 acres near Deshler.

Mr. FAYRAM married Miss Maude WINTER, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is the daughter of the late George WINTER. Mr. FAYRAM is widely known, not only in his own town, but among the traveling public, and is deservedly popular with all who come in contact with him. He strives to advance in every possible way the best interests of his community, while at the same time giving due attention to his own business interests.

Christian BAUER, a successful farmer in Flatrock Township, was bom in Wittenberg, Germany, on September 24, 1835, the son of Bartly and Catherine BAUER, neither of whom ever left their native land. The subject came to America in 1852, having received a good education in the schools of Germany. He came at once to Henry County and served three years at the trade of cabinet-making under Henry ANDREWS, of Florida, after which he worked 1 Vz years at farm labor for the same gentleman. He then bought 40 acres of land in Flatrock Township, which he cleared, and later made 2 other purchases, of 40 and 80 acres, being now the owner of 160 acres, all of which is in a high state of cultivation and adorned with good buildings. He is giving his active attention to the cultivation of this land.

In 1861 Mr. BAUER married Caroline SEAFERT, of Medina County, OH, who was born in 1841, the daughter of Lawrence and Theresa (SHAWINDAMAN) SEAFERT, natives of Germany who came to America in an early day, in Missouri, where they died. They had 9 children, Felix, Nicholas, Frederick, Lawrence, Andrew, Mary, Catherine, Caroline, Mary Magdaline and Eve. The subject and his wife have 7 children, Mary (Mrs. John WESTRICK), Theresa (deceased), John, Eva Lena (Mrs. Michael SWARTZ), Ida (Mrs. Albert CORESSEL), Minnie (Mrs. (Peter SWARTZ), and Agnes (Mrs. Samuel OWENS). In politics Mr. BAUER is a Democrat, while in religion he and his wife are Catholics. He is alive to the best interests of the community and takes a keen interest in the welfare of the community, being well known and liked by all.
